because who doesn't love a little crazy?

My collection is growing!!!

I absolutely love V.C. Andrews books; they are such a twisted guilty pleasure. I read the famous Dollanganger series (aka, Flowers In The Attic) a few years back and just tore through it!!! There are a total of 5 big books in the series, and I think I read them in a couple weeks. I was ADDICTED. The story is really, really dark and messed up. Am I weird for liking such things? Maybe. But so did millions of other people… so whatever, hahaha. I mean, it's definitely no 50 Shades of Grey, but it's still a really fucked up story. (sidenote- I've never read 5SOG, but since I saw an ad for the movie, I ordered the first book the other day. I fear for my life. I've heard it's complete horseshit, but since I DO tend to like weird stories, I think I will enjoy it. Plus- who doesn't like a little erotica? hahaha). Anyway, if you don't know the basic storyline of Flowers In The Attic, it's about these four kids whose mother locks them in the attic for years. That's all I will tell you. But if you're into weird, twisted stories- you will love this series. And don't just read the first one! Read all five!!!

Since reading the Dollanganger series, I have been getting into the other series, even though V.C. Andrews didn't actually write the other series. She died shortly after the release of the Dollanganger series and hired a ghost writer to continue her legacy. However, I assume that she had left many notes on the concepts for the other series. And they are quite similar to her first. Currently, I am reading My Sweet Audrina, and I am SOOOO into it. I love the writing style and just the weird, WEIRD story. V.C. Andrews actually DID write this book and it is the only title that she released as a single novel, not a series.

Do you guys know of any other strange, dark books out there? Do I have any fellow odd balls reading this blog? hahaha. Or have you guys read any of the V.C. Andrews series? Which was your favorite??

  6. I have a strong feeling I read the first book of the Dollanger series, Flowers in the attic... in french though because it's my native language. When you said four kids locked in an attic I had kind of a flashback... and now I want to re-read it because it was so good! Thank you for bringing this from my memories, it is trully awesome!

  9. Those are cool looking books! But I have never heard of them before. I am not a reader by any means unless its manga or fanfiction lol. I have read however 50 Shades and yeah I loved it. I think all girls like a little erotica once in awhile ^///^. I am one of those "half readers" where I'll start a book but then I will never finish it. 50SOG I did finish the first book but then only got half way through the second. Same thing happened when I tried to read Twilight, finished the first but only half through the second. So yeah...I don't know, I have a hard time focusing when reading. My mind tends to wonder. I do someday want to conquer reading Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings since those are my all time favorite movie series and I know the books are like 1000 times better. It will be on my bucket list. ;)

  10. I'll definitely check them out! Have you ever read the Gone series? I think you'd love it so much. It's pretty dark and reminds me a lot of Lord of the Flies. It's about this small town where everyone over the age of 15 suddenly disappears and the kids can't leave and they kind of go crazy. I won't say more but you should totally read it ^_^

  11. Don't Close Your Eyes by Lisa McMann is just a thrilling mystery book filled with strange things you reconsider might happen in life. It gives you a new whole persfective of dreaming. I recomend it, btw I'm so going to try to read those books you recommended.

  13. OMG I'm not alone ^.^ I LOOOVE Flowers In The Attic. I found it towards the back section in my school library and I tore through the book in like 6hrs it was so dark and twisty which is different from my normal geeky yet girly personality.Personally I Think the grandma was a totes crazy old witch :p sorta like my grandma with her old Puerto Rican superstitions

  14. Ohhh, I love Flowers in the Attic! I've only seen the movies but I can imagine the book would be just as good, gonna give it a try. As for 5HOG.. I read the whole series when I was 17 only because my whole class was doing it. Probably gonna watch the movie to see if it lived up to the books anyways. I recommend 'The Glass Castle' by Jeannette Walls and 'Loves Music, Loves to Dance' by my favorite suspense author ever, Mary Higgins Clark.

  18. I just finished a 3 book series by Anne Rice called The Witching Hour and it DEFINATELY fits the qualification of a completely fucking twisted, dark and weird story. I just loved it (hahah dunno what that says about me) but I enjoyed the 50SOG series as well.

  22. I'll definitely give Flowers in the Attic a try, it sounds really good! Thanks for the ideas (:
As for strange, dark books, read almost anything by Richard Laymon.
All his books that I've read end with a plot twist and are filled with dark themes.
He's also obsessed with gore and sexual themes, so if those are okay with you then maybe you should give him a try!

  23. A weird & fairly twisted book I love is "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" by Stephen King. It's about an 8 year old little girl who gets lost in the woods & crazy shit happens. I've been looking for something new to read & was wanting something creepy so I'm gonna def pick up some stuff by VC Andrews!

  26. kalel, i love you so much. but these days, i was so not me, idk what is life anymore, every time when im down, i watch your videos and usually my smile will always comes up. but now, idk why, not anymore ... my dog passed away 2 days ago, due to rat pesticide poisoned, i was predicting someone had poisoned him, bc he is actually like a "cat" to me, he caught a lot of mice when he is still here. he is such a buddy that i trusted the most, my best companion when im down and done with the world, an escape from the reality of life, a little brother i love the most. now he's gone, i dont hear his barks, his "singing" and i dont smell him anymore, i know this sounded so sick but yeah, i love him so so much. he is a smart dog, he saved my life. he brought happiness to me and my family, he's now totally gone. the last time i talked to him was 2 days ago, in the pet hospital, he collapse in agony of pain, he pretended he was fine for 2 days. i actually knew he wasnt fine, but he pretended just not to make us sad. im so not sure whether he hears our words, feel our love for the very last time of his live. at last i chosen to let him die peacefully by euthanasia. he started to bleed a lot before he died, bleed lots of times per day, his bone marrow doesnt produce any new cells to fight with the poison. i dont trust anyone more than this loyal buddy, he knew all of my secrets cause i will always tell him, but now i lost my direction. kalel, im really sad.

  30. I also love V.C. Andrews. I read them when I was younger and rediscovered them recently.

Try the casteel family series (heaven) it's my favorite after flowers in the attic. But they are all really good.

I haven't found another author who writes twisted takes in the same compelling manner, guess I'll keep a look out.

    Enjoy your reading. :D

  33. My mum read The Flowers in the Attic, and loved it!
I've read "Trylle Trilogy" and "Watersong", both written by Amanda Hocking. Both series are classed as "Paranormal" (in Australia at least) - but they are, I guess you could say - "Fantasy/Romance/Adventure" styles of books. They are wonderful to read, I read through all of them very quickly because I loved the stroyline and how they are told.
The series for "Beautiful Creatures" (and following books) - are all wonderful also. :)

  35. I'm really into the authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They write together and have a great series of books that are a little supernatural, a little historical, a little medical, and just such good stories. Start with Relic if you're looking to get into a new great series.

  36. It sounds so good, I will defiantly try these out, thank you #^_^#

  37. If you haven't read it, I recommend 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde. It is really messed up. On weirdness level, though, in comparison to 'Flowers in the Attic', I think it would depend on the reader. It is definitely an interesting story though.

  38. Does anthony read as much as you?love from germany;) <3

  39. You should read The Ants by Bernard Werber. It's a trilogy by a french writer. This is really weird and fucked up but also fascinating, these books are really hard to put down. I feel like you could like that universe :)
Anyway, I hope you have a good day !

  40. I love V.C Andrews!! I read a lot of her books. My favorite has to be the Cutler series and the Landry series. But I love her books, you should also read the Casteel series if you haven't already.

  41. I just finished reading "Miss Peregrine's home for peculiar children" by Ransom Riggs and I really enjoyed it. It's not extremely dark but it's full of creepy vintage photos :) I can't wait for the movie, Tim Burton will be the director so I have very high expectations! :P

  42. I actually looked V.C. Andrews books and thought they were really interesting, but I never ended up buying them. I will definitely have to pick some up real soon. :)

  44. I'm a huge reader so I'll have to check out the Dollanganger series!
I myself don't have TONS of suggestions for you that are similar to that.. but I do have one! It's called Dismantled by Jennifer McMahon. Here is the link to it's Goodread's page if you want to read more about it!
    http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dismantled-jennifer-mcmahon/1103176726?ean=9780061689345

BTW, you should make a Goodreads account if you are looking for suggestions! You rate books (so for this series you would obviously rate it really high) and then they suggest books that you may like that are very similar! It's a wonderful site!

  45. I am definitely all about reading V.C Andrews. She writes such intriguing novels that its hard to put them down! Although they are most definitely pretty weird subjects to want to write novels about (ahem, Twilight Child and Secrets of the Morning anyone?) it doesn't seem to matter. I think that's also what sets her a part from other authors because she isn't afraid to write about touchy subjects. Anyways I've not come across any more novels like this one yet as I usually tend to go for really light hearted novels or full on horror books and for some reason not much in between, haha. Except there is one that I recommend called In My Skin by Kate Holden. It's a memoir of a normal English major from Australia who gets into heroine and how she survives for many years with the habit. She goes into great detail some really fucked up things but it opens yours eyes up to a lot of things and definitely worth a read!
Hope you have a lovely day :)

  51. Loved V.C. Andrews when I was a young teenager! I started with Flowers in the Attic too. My favorite of the entire line of V.C. Andrews was the Heaven Casteel series, followed closely by My Sweet Audrina. So glad I'm not the only "messed up" person who enjoys these books. Lifetime just recently remade the movie of Flowers in the Attic this year, and I liked it a lot better than the first version of the movie back in the 80's with Kristy Swanson. You should check it out.

  52. I used to read a lot of Stephen king novel and watch the movies after and we all know i'ts really dark and twisted! But this semester in school, my english teacher ask us to read a novel from Heather O'Neill `` Lullabies for little Criminals`` and I've found it really good and it's also dark and I just couldn't stop reading because I was wondering COULD THIS GO WORST? Hahhaa, so if you have any spare time and you want to read an easy level novel you better check it out :)

    mucho love xo

  54. There is a book called "House of Leaves" that is very complex, dark, and creepy that you may really like. I haven't read it but I know people who have that loved it and it's a real mind bender. Sounds like something you may like. There also is another book I've read called "A Certain Slant of Light" that is a romance but not a traditional one at all and it is very, not creepy, but like strange in a good way. A sequel to it just came out too. It would be so cool if you read it and I got your opinion of it. And the other book is something that seems to me you would really like.

  58. I love flowers in the attic. It's definitely on my top five list. V.C Andrews had a thing for messed up families, that's for sure, and they're all so interesting to read. I used to want to collect and read them all, but I kind of forgot about them. This makes me want to start up again. My sweet Audrina is amazing! So twisted. I'd love to know how you feel about it when you finish!

  60. After reading your post I became interested in reading the Dolanganger series. 66. Maybe you'd like reading Her Fearful Symmetry by Aurdrey Niffenegger. Super duper weird, it was one of the few books I've ever felt addicted to reading. Quick shitty synopsis since it's been a while since I read it: It involves a pair of mirror-image twins, a man with OCD, and another man coping with the loss of a loved one.

  67. The Girl With Glass Feet by Ali Shaw

  68. I just got done reading Consequences by Aletha Romig and OMG I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! It's a trilogy and I'm super excited to read the next books! It has an insane plot twist at the end and it's kinda fucked up, but hey who doesn't enjoy a little of that lately?

  70. V.C Andrews books are amazing! I would recommend The Casteel Series start with Heaven there's five books in this series, V.C Andrews started writing the first 2 books in series then half way threw the third the ghostwriter had completed the rest then followed with two more books in series it's really good second fav to the dollanganger series:)) also it's a short read but try reading "Living dead Girl" was a twisted read...
